Vans Pier Classic 2012 Final Day

April 1, 2012 – It was Victory at Sea conditions for the Vans Pier Classic 2012 Final Day in Huntington Beach, California.

My good friend John Philpotts and I decided to set up to shoot from the pier.  It was truly a gorgeous, clear, sunny day, however, the COLD winds were howling over the ocean.  It was relentless for the entire day, but getting the pros surfing right at you when they make those lefts is an amazing shot and I was excited.  I was fully prepared to take on the elements.  Besides, my job was easy compared to the surfers.  They had to battle the wild conditions and that was hard work.  It took all they had just to paddle back out through the tough current after each wave.  There was size to these waves as well, although, most weren’t very clean.

This was the Vans Pier Classic 2012 final day.  I was extra stoked to see three San Clemente locals in the contest Chris Ward, Tanner Gudauskas, and Nate Yeomans.  I am most definitely not there just for the sole purpose of shooting the event.  I am a fan of the sport of surfing through and through.  It is art and beauty in motion when done well.  The venue, for me, is the best and most beautiful of all sports and my favorite place to be.  Even if on this particular day, I thought I might get blown right off the pier.

The Vans Pier Classic 2012 final day started with the Juniors competition.  Hawaiian Keanu Asing was a standout and would go on to win the Juniors level of the competition.  He was greeted on the shore by his father after exiting the water sharing a victory embrace.  It was a touching moment.  The Men’s competition was next.  I was proud of all of the guys, especially my San Clemente boys.  They all surfed amazing regardless of the conditions. In the end, Nate Yoemans and Nat Young were in the race to win. Nate Yeomans came so close with a score of 14.87, behind Young’s 15.08 a .20 difference in score.   Nat Young  took the Men’s division.

It was an exciting day in Huntington Beach.  These guys rip in any conditions and I’m glad I was there to witness and shoot it.

Southern California Sunset Images

I am particularly proud of my collection of Southern California Sunset Images.  Because I live in a location where I am fortunate enough to shoot Southern California Sunset Images almost nightly, I have quite a large library.

You just never know what you’ll see on any given evening in terms of color.  Every night is a blank canvas and a new work of art.  In my home, the television doesn’t come on until after the sun has set.   Who needs to see the news or latest sitcom when Mother Nature’s show is displayed in such a magnificent and vibrant way? So much better than anything High Definition television can reproduce. Even the stormy sunsets are beautiful when the ocean seems angry and turbulent.  During those moments, you might just see a few rays of light breaking through in beams on the surface of the sea.  It’s as if the heavens are looking down on us earthlings.

I think sunsets bring people peace.   Time stands still for a few brief moments, all the troubles of the world melt away and a sense of calm flows through you.  At least I know that’s what they do for me.  My Southern California Sunset Images are predominantly from the San Clemente area as this is where I reside, but I do like to capture them from other areas with different vantage points.  I actually find that often times, they’re at their most colorful and vibrant after the sun has actually dipped below the horizon.  Having some beautiful high clouds floating about is always a plus!  There is a reflective quality and the sun beams bounce off of them creating an amazing painting in the sky.  The winter produces some of the most gorgeous sunsets there are.  And in the warmer months, when the offshore winds filter through, I can capture the majestic Catalina and San Clemente Islands in full view.  I hope that you’ll take a few moments to enjoy these Southern California Sunset Images as much as I do.
